FIRE by age

Can you retire at 50 with $1, $2 or $3 million?

A retirement that starts at 50 may last 40 years or more. At Morningstar's latest 40-year starting rate of 3.3%, $1,000,000 supports $33,000 in the first year, $2,000,000 supports $66,000 and $3,000,000 supports $99,000, each raised with inflation after that.

First-year withdrawal at four starting rates, raised with inflation in later years:

Portfolio2.9% (50 years)3.3% (40 years)3.5% (35 years)4% rule (30 years)
$1,000,000$29,000$33,000$35,000$40,000
$2,000,000$58,000$66,000$70,000$80,000
$3,000,000$87,000$99,000$105,000$120,000

The rates are Morningstar's estimates for each length of retirement, with a 90% chance of the money lasting in its simulations; the amounts are our calculation. Retiring at 50, a 40-year horizon reaches 90.

How long each lasts

Years each portfolio lasts at a fixed yearly spending in today's dollars, taken at the start of the year, with a steady 3% return after inflation. The age in brackets is when it runs out for someone who retires at 50:

Spending a year$1,000,000$2,000,000$3,000,000
$60,00022.5 years (to 72)Past age 100Indefinitely
$80,00015.3 years (to 65)44.1 years (to 94)Indefinitely
$100,00011.6 years (to 61)29.6 years (to 79)Past age 100
$120,0009.4 years (to 59)22.5 years (to 72)44.1 years (to 94)
$150,0007.3 years (to 57)16.6 years (to 66)29.6 years (to 79)

"Indefinitely" means the return pays for the spending and the balance never runs out; "Past age 100" means it shrinks but outlasts any normal plan. With two bad years first (−20% and −10%), $2,000,000 at $80,000 a year lasts 23.9 years instead of 44.1 years.

Adding Social Security

Retirement benefits can begin at 62 at the earliest, reduced, and full benefits start at 67 for anyone born in 1960 or later. A benefit that starts later lowers what the portfolio has to pay from then on. Example: $2,000,000, spending $100,000 a year and a 3% return after inflation, with a benefit of $30,000 a year from 67:

ScenarioYears the portfolio lasts
No Social Security29.6 years
$30,000 a year from 6736.8 years

The $30,000 is an example, not an estimate of your benefit. Your own figure is on your statement at ssa.gov, and it depends on your earnings record and the age you claim.

Risks after 50

  • The 10% tax before 59½. Withdrawals from IRAs and workplace plans before 59½ generally owe a 10% additional tax unless an exception applies. One covers workplace plans after you leave that employer at 55 or later. Retiring at 50 leaves a gap; the options are in how much you need to retire at 40.
  • Health insurance until 65. Medicare starts at 65, so 15 years of coverage belong in your spending figure.
  • A bad start. A fall in the first years does more damage than the same fall later; see the 4% rule explained.
  • Fees. A 1% yearly fee turns a 3% return into 2%: $2,000,000 at $80,000 a year lasts 34.0 years instead of 44.1 years.

These figures are illustrations worked out from stated assumptions, not forecasts. Real returns vary from year to year, and taxes, fees and the order of good and bad years change the outcome. See the disclaimer.

Questions people ask

At what age is $2 million enough to retire?

That depends on spending and how long the money has to last. At Morningstar's rates, $2,000,000 supports $78,000 a year for a 30-year retirement, $66,000 for 40 years and $58,000 for 50 years. Spending $66,000 a year points to a retirement starting around 50; spending $78,000 points to around 60.

How much monthly income will $2 million generate?

At a 3.3% starting rate, $2,000,000 gives $5,500 a month in the first year; at 4%, $6,667. Both rise with inflation in later years and are before tax.

Is 1 million in retirement at 50 good?

It is more than most families that age have: among families headed by someone 45 to 54, $1,000,000 of net worth is at about the 76th percentile in the Federal Reserve's 2025 survey, and net worth includes the home. As retirement income at 3.3%, it supports $33,000 in the first year.

What age can I retire if I have $1,000,000?

At Morningstar's rates, $1,000,000 supports $39,000 a year for 30 years, $35,000 for 35, $33,000 for 40 and $29,000 for 50. If you spend $35,000 a year, that points to a retirement of about 35 years, from around 55.
