RMD calculator
Your required minimum distribution from the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table, with the next years projected.
Your required minimum distribution is last year's December 31 balance divided by the IRS divisor for your age. At 75 the divisor is 24.6, so a $500,000 IRA must pay out at least $20,325 this year.
Required minimum distribution
$20,325
$500,000 ÷ 24.6, the IRS divisor for age 75.
That is 4.07% of the balance this year; the share rises every year.

How the RMD is worked out
RMD = balance on December 31 of last year ÷ distribution period for your age
The distribution period comes from the Uniform Lifetime Table in IRS Publication 590-B, which most IRA owners use. RMDs start at age 73, or 75, depending on your date of birth. The first one can wait until April 1 of the year after you reach that age; every later one is due by December 31.
The Uniform Lifetime Table
| Age | Distribution period | RMD on $100,000 | Share of the balance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 73 | 26.5 | $3,774 | 3.77% |
| 75 | 24.6 | $4,065 | 4.07% |
| 77 | 22.9 | $4,367 | 4.37% |
| 80 | 20.2 | $4,950 | 4.95% |
| 85 | 16 | $6,250 | 6.25% |
| 90 | 12.2 | $8,197 | 8.2% |
| 95 | 8.9 | $11,236 | 11.24% |
| 100 | 6.4 | $15,625 | 15.63% |
Owners whose only beneficiary is a spouse more than 10 years younger use a different table, the Joint and Last Survivor table, which gives a smaller RMD.
Missing an RMD
The IRS says the amount not withdrawn may be subject to an excise tax of 25%, reduced to 10% if the RMD is corrected within two years. Roth IRAs have no RMDs for the original owner.
Questions people ask
What is the RMD percentage at age 73?
The divisor at 73 is 26.5, so the RMD is 1 ÷ 26.5 = 3.77% of last year's December 31 balance.
What is the RMD on 1 million?
At 75 it is $1,000,000 ÷ 24.6 = $40,650; at 80, $1,000,000 ÷ 20.2 = $49,505.
How much RMD do I have to take?
At least the balance on December 31 of last year divided by your age's divisor, for each traditional IRA; the IRA RMDs can be added up and taken from any of your IRAs. You can always take more than the minimum.
