How it works
Value in year B = amount × CPI(B) ÷ CPI(A)
The calculator uses the annual average of the CPI-U, the index the Bureau of Labor Statistics publishes for all urban consumers. For $100 from 1990 to 2025: $100 × 321.943 ÷ 130.7 = $246. The latest monthly reading is 336.94 for 2026-09; the annual averages run to 2025.
A dollar across the decades
What $100 of each year buys in 2025 dollars:
| Year | CPI-U average | $100 in 2025 dollars | Average inflation a year since |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1950 | 24.1 | $1,336 | 3.52% |
| 1970 | 38.8 | $830 | 3.92% |
| 1980 | 82.4 | $391 | 3.07% |
| 1990 | 130.7 | $246 | 2.61% |
| 2000 | 172.2 | $187 | 2.53% |
| 2010 | 218.1 | $148 | 2.63% |
| 2020 | 258.8 | $124 | 4.46% |
Why it matters for retirement
Every figure on Enough Path is in today's dollars because a spending target set now has to keep its buying power. At 3% a year, prices double in about 23 years, so $40,000 of spending today would need $83,751 in 25 years. The FIRE calculator handles this by working with returns after inflation.
Questions people ask
How does inflation get calculated?
In the US the usual measure is the consumer price index: the Bureau of Labor Statistics prices a fixed basket of goods and services every month. Inflation over a period is the change in the index: from 2024 to 2025 the annual average went from 313.689 to 321.943, a rise of 2.63%.
What is the CPI inflation calculator?
A calculator that converts an amount between years with the consumer price index, as this one does. The Bureau of Labor Statistics runs its own, based on monthly figures; this page uses annual averages, so results can differ slightly from a month-to-month comparison.
